Daniel Sexton Gurney left this world yesterday after many spectacular years of automotive accomplishment. Universally admired by racers and auto insiders alike, Gurney, 86, personified the can-do attitude of his generation. As a driver, team owner, inventor, manufacturer, and personality, his decades long impact in motorsports will be felt forever. Having won races in IndyCar, Formula 1, NASCAR, and Sports Cars during his 15 year driving career, Dan Gurney’s racing biography reads like none other. His mechanical knowledge separated him from the pack, and anyone who had the opportunity to work with him knew immediately he was to be respected when it came to the nuts-and-bolts. His 1967 Grand Prix of Belgium victory marked the only time an American has built, raced, and won with a car of their own design in Formula 1.
