The GM Futurliners were bus-like vehicles General Motors built in 1939 for the New York World’s Fair, and were later part of GM’s “Parade of Progress” tour. Styled by the legendary Harley Earl, and built by GMC Truck and Fisher Coach & Body, they were of impressive size at 11-1/2 feet tall, almost 8 feet wide, 33 feet long, and weighing in at 30,000 pounds. Twelve of them were made, and most of them are accounted for today. The “Parade of Progress” tour featured new and exciting technology like jet engines, microwave ovens, stereophonic sound, and television. After the “Parade of Progress” ended its 150 stop tour across North America in 1956, the buses were both sold and given away by GM. One was even owned for a while by evangelist Oral Roberts and used for his crusades across America.
